Cheste (Valencian:Xest) is amunicipality in thecomarca ofHoya de Buñol in theValencian Community, Spain, located 26 km from the capitalValencia.

History

[edit]

According to the Valencian historianEscolano, the first settlers of the region of Cheste were members ofIberian tribes belonging to the oldEdetania. This view is supported by numerous remains, particularly those ofEl Castillarejo (Iberian ceramics and spear points from theBronze Age).

TheCheste hoard, a cache of gold jewellery and silver coins, was discovered in the locality of La Safa in 1864. The presence ofCarthaginian coinage issued by theBarcids alongside an earlyRomandenarius implies the hoard dates to around the time of theSecond Punic War.[3][4]
