A national body, the Chess Federation of South Africa, was formed in 1948. Underapartheid , society was divided on racial grounds, and governed by whites, and the body catered for whites only. The first non-racial organisation, the Western Province Chess Association, was founded in 1964.[ 1]

South Africa first participated in the1958 Olympiad in Munich. In 1974, South Africa was suspended byFIDE due to thesports boycott as a result of the country'sapartheid policies, returning to play at the1992 Olympiad after the end of apartheid.
