Originally namedUnited Eagle Airlines Co., Ltd (鹰联航空公司; also known asUEAir), the company was founded in 2004 by a former executive ofChina Northwest Airlines, with the necessary funding being provided by the Vickers Financial Group.[4] It received its first airliner, anAirbus A320 that previously had belonged toAir Jamaica, on 8 July 2005,[citation needed] and service began on 27 July.[4] Another similar aircraft type, the slightly smallerAirbus A319, was put in service with United Eagle Airlines on December 2 of that same year.[citation needed]
In March 2009,Sichuan Airlines invested 200 millionRMB (30 millionUSD) in United Eagle Airlines,[5] thus holding 76 percent of theshares.[4] In late 2009, Sichuan Airlines sold the shares to Chinese aircraft manufacturerComac and toChengdu Communications Investment Group. Following this ownership change, United Eagle Airlines placed an order for 30Comac ARJ21s, the first of which initially was planned to be delivered in late 2010.[6]
On 23 January 2010, the airline was renamedChengdu Airlines.[4][6]
