Cheena Kottaram orChina Palace is a rest house that was constructed in 1904 forSri Mulam Tirunal Rama Varma, the then-King of Travancore. The palace was completed along with the commissioning ofQuilon-Madras rail line. It is a single-storied, red-brick building with seven rooms. The architecture of Cheena Kottaram isIndo-Saracenic—generally a blend ofIndian architecture,European,Islamic, andMoorish architecture. Cheena Kottaram is yet to get the 'National Heritage Monument' accreditation.[1]
Kollamites called this rest houseCheena Kottaram (China Palace) because of its resemblance to the ancientChinese buildings.
Before the independence ofIndia, the commercial capital ofTravancore kingdom wasQuilon (Kollam) - the city with the best business and commercial reputation in theTravancore-Malabar Coast, with high level of export-import operations through the flourishingQuilon Port.[2]Kollam was known asPalace City that time as there were so many palaces in the city then.Quilon Aerodrome, serving theTravancore-Malabar Coast, was the only airport inKollam city at that time. During that time, there was no rail-air connectivity toThiruvananthapuram.Kings of Travancore used to travel fromKollam.[3] Rail connections arrived with the construction of the Cheena Kottaram, close to theQuilon Junction railway station.[4]
