TheChebo orChabo are anethnic group of theSouthwest Shewa Zone andWest Shewa Zone in theOromia Region of south-west Ethiopia. The Chebo speak theOromo language but originate from theGurage ethnic group. Their religion isEthiopia Orthodox Christianity,[1] the livelihood of the Chebo-Inchini area is described asenset (Ethiopian banana),barley, andcattle.[2]
One possible explanation of the name Chebo is from the Chebe plant,Croton gratissimus (lavender croton),[3] which is normally burned duringMeskel damera celebrations.
Another possible explanation is the name of the area where the Chebo people live. Parts of the south west Shewa Zone had been incorporated in Chebo and Gurage districts[4][5] in theShewaprovince, as it was called prior to 1995.
