Chatterjee (Bengali:চ্যাটার্জি), also known asChattopadhyay is aBengali Hindu surname, used by theKulin group of theBengali Brahmin caste.[1] Together withBanerjees,Mukherjees,Bhattacharjees, andGangulys, Chatterjees form the Kulin Brahmins, the highest tier of theBengali caste system.[2] They belong toRarhi clan of Bengali Brahmins and theKashyapagotra.

Chatterjee is anAnglicized variant of the SanskritizedChattopadhyay.[1] English language spellings include Chatterjee, Chatterjea, Chatterji, Chaterjee, Chattopadhyay, and Chattopadhyaya.[3][4][5][6][7]
