Chase Robert Petty (born April 4, 2003) is an American professionalbaseballpitcher in theCincinnati Reds organization. He was selected by theMinnesota Twins in the first round of the2021 Major League Baseball draft.

Early life and amateur career

Petty initially grew up inMillville, New Jersey, before his family moved toSomers Point, New Jersey, when he was 14.[1] He attendedMainland Regional High School.[2][3] He committed to play college baseball at theUniversity of Florida during his sophomore year.[4] Petty's junior season was canceled due to COVID-19, after which he focused on physical training and increased hisfastball velocity to 100 miles per hour (160 km/h).[5][6][7] As a senior, he was named the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year after pitching to a 6–1win–loss record with a 1.00earned run average (ERA) and 99strikeouts in48+2⁄3innings pitched.[8][9]

Professional career

Petty was selected with the 26th overall pick in the2021 Major League Baseball draft by theMinnesota Twins.[10] He signed with the team on July 26, 2021, and received a $2.5 million signing bonus.[11]

On March 13, 2022, the Twins traded Petty to theCincinnati Reds in exchange forSonny Gray and Francis Peguero.[12] He opened the 2022 season with theDaytona Tortugas.[13] Petty was promoted to theHigh-ADayton Dragons after going 0–4 record with a 3.18 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 17 appearances with 12 starts at Daytona.[14]
