Charles Tillinghast Patterson (February 4, 1869 - March 27, 1918) was an owner andtrainer ofThoroughbred racehorses best known for his win in the1917 Kentucky Derby withOmar Khayyam and as the owner and trainer ofOrnament, the 1897American Horse of the Year andAmerican Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse.[1]
Patterson's father was an owner ofStandardbred horses and as young man, Charles was aharness racing driver. In 1891 his interests shifted toThoroughbred racing and he was hired to train the horses of renownedKentucky owner and breederJohn Madden.[2]
Charles Patterson died on March 27, 1918. He was training forRobert L. Gerry from a base atBelmont Park at the time of his death.[3]
