Charles Noel Crosby (September 29, 1876 – January 26, 1951) was aDemocratic member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromPennsylvania and anAmerican football coach in the early years of the sport.
Charles N. Crosby was born in a farming settlement namedCherry Valley, nearAndover, Ohio. He attended the New Lyme Institute andAllegheny College inMeadville, Pennsylvania. He attendedWestern Reserve University inCleveland, Ohio, where he was a member for thefootball team, graduating in 1897.[1] He moved toLinesville, Pennsylvania, in 1901, engaging in the manufacture ofsilos and in the lumber business. He became engaged in agricultural pursuits in 1914. He was a member of theLinesville andMeadville Boards of Education from 1920 to 1929, and served as president of the Meadville Chamber of Commerce from 1922 to 1924.[2]
Crosby was elected as aDemocrat to theSeventy-third,Seventy-fourth, andSeventy-fifth Congresses representingPennsylvania's 29th congressional district. He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1938. He moved toMontgomery County, Maryland, in 1940 and operated a large dairy farm nearClarksburg, Maryland.
He was one of the 53 supporters in Congress along withFiorello La Guardia in favor of aUnited States Constitutional amendment giving congressional power to overturnUnited States Supreme Court decisions.[3]
While at Allegheny, Crosby was the head coach of theAllegheny Gators football team. He held that position for the 1897 season and is the first coach on record for the program. His coaching record at Allegheny was 0–4.[4]
He died inFrederick, Maryland, and was interred in Columbia Gardens Cemetery inArlington, Virginia.[5] He is interred atColumbia Gardens Cemetery inArlington, Virginia.[6]
Another politician buried in Columbia Gardens is Charles Noel Crosby (1876-1951). He was a Pennsylvanian Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1933 to 1939.
