Dr.Charles M. Clarke (born inMelbourne,Australia) is anecologist andbotanist specialising in thecarnivorous plantgenusNepenthes, for which he is regarded as a world authority.[1] Clarke has anhonours degree in Botany fromMonash University inMelbourne, and aPh.D. inEcosystem management at theUniversity of New England, inArmidale,New South Wales.

Clarke first travelled to Borneo in search ofpitcher plants in 1987. In 1989 and 1990 he lived inBrunei, studying theecology ofNepenthes. In between travels, Clarke has taughtEcology andBiometrics atJames Cook University inQueensland, and worked as ahorticultural consultant inHong Kong.

He now works at theCairns Botanic Garden.[1] Clarke has writtenfive books and guides onNepenthes, which present a synthesis of the research performed on his travels around theMalay Archipelago. The most significant of these works are the monographsNepenthes of Borneo (1997) andNepenthes of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia (2001).[2]

Clarke has described six species ofNepenthes:N. baramensis (now known asN. hemsleyana[3]),N. benstonei,N. chaniana,N. izumiae,N. jacquelineae, andN. tenax.

The standardauthor abbreviationC.Clarke is used to indicate this person as the author whenciting abotanical name.[4]
