Charles Edward Woodcock (June 12, 1854 – March 12, 1940) was bishop of theEpiscopal Diocese of Kentucky from 1905 to 1935. He was consecrated on January 25, 1905.

Early life and education

Woodcock was born on June 12, 1854, inNew Britain, Connecticut, the son of Joseph B. Woodcock and Caroline Shaw.[1] He was educated in private and public schools.[2] He also studied atBerkeley Divinity School from where he graduated with aBachelor of Sacred Theology in 1882. He was awarded aDoctor of Sacred Theology fromHobart College in 1904, and aDoctor of Divinity fromSewanee: The University of the South in 1905, fromBerkeley Divinity School in 1908 and from theUniversity of Louisville in 1913.[3]

Ordained ministry

Woodcock was ordained deacon in 1882 and priest in 1883. In 1882, he became assistant at Grace Church inBaltimore, while in 1884, he became rector of the Church of the Ascension inNew Haven, Connecticut. Between 1888 and 1900, he served as rector of Christ Church inAnsonia, Connecticut, later serving as rector ofSaint John's Church inDetroit from 1900 till 1905.[4]

Bishop

On November 16, 1904, Woodcock was elected Bishop of Kentucky and was consecrated on January 25, 1905, by Presiding BishopDaniel S. Tuttle. He retired in 1935 and died five year later on March 12, 1940.
