Charlene Polio (born 1961) is anAmericanlinguist. She is currently a professor in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures atMichigan State University,The United States.[1] Her research focuses onsecond language acquisition with a special focus onsecond language writing.
Polio obtained herBachelor of Arts degree inLinguistics in 1983 and herMaster of Science degree inTESOL in 1984 at theUniversity of Pennsylvania. In 1992 she obtained herPhD inApplied linguistics at theUniversity of California, Los Angeles.[2]
Polio was the co-editor ofThe Modern Language Journal.She is co-editor ofTESOL Quarterly along with Peter De Costa.[3][4]
Since April 2018 she has been a member-at-large of theAmerican Association for Applied Linguistics.[5]
Polio's research focuses on second language writing with a special focus onlanguage complexity. She is noted for her research synthesis on accuracy measures, published inLanguage Learning in 1997. She identified three different types of accuracy measures: (1) holistic scores, (2) error-free units, and (3) error counts.[6]
