Charilaos "Charis" Papageorgiou (alternate spellings: Harilaos, Haris) (Greek: Χαρίλαος "Χάρης" Παπαγεωργίου; born March 26, 1953, inThessaloniki,Greece) is a Greek retired professionalbasketball player and current basketball executive. At a height of 1.95m (6 ft. 43⁄4 in.), he played at thesmall forward position.
After playing with theyouth system clubs of Anagennisi, from 1965 to 1971, Papageorgiou began his seniorclub career with theGreek League clubAris in 1971. Papageorgiou was theGreek League Top Scorer, in the 1975–76 and 1978–79 seasons. During the 1978–79 Greek League season, hescored 60 points in a single game.
Unfortunately, at the age of 26, and at the peak of his career, Papageorgiou suffered apartial rupture of hisAchilles tendon, at the end of the 1978–79 season. As a result, he was sidelined from playing basketball for three years. After that injury, he was never the same player, and he was unable to regain his place as one of the best players in Greece.
In 1983, Papageorgiou moved to Faiakes Corfu. He then returned to Aris in 1985, before joiningIlysiakos in 1987.[1][2]
Papageorgiou was a member of the senior men'sGreek national team. With Greece's senior national team, he had a total of 82caps, and scored a total of 886 points, for a scoring average of 10.8 points per game.[3] With Greece, he played at the1973 FIBA EuroBasket, the1979 FIBA EuroBasket, and the1981 FIBA EuroBasket.[4][5]
After his playing career, Papageorgiou worked as thePresident ofAris Thessaloniki club.
