Hwang Chan-sung (Korean:황찬성, born February 11, 1990),[1] also known mononymously asChansung, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, rapper and actor. He is a member of the Korean boy band2PM. He made his debut as an actor in the 2006 comedy seriesUnstoppable High Kick, and since then has gone on to star in the Japanese dramaKaitō Royale (2011) and7th Grade Civil Servant (2013).
Hwang was born and raised inSeoul, South Korea, where he still resides. As a child, he had no interest in the performing arts and trained intaekwondo andkumdo with the ambition of becoming a taekwondo instructor.[2] InOur Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education he revealed that he holds a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo.[3][4] He transferred toKorean Arts High School after joiningJYP Entertainment and graduated in 2008 alongsideRaina ofAfter School and fellow JYP Entertainment traineesSunye andJo Kwon.[5]
Hwang was a television actor, having played roles in MBC's 2006 comedy sitcomUnstoppable High Kick and then in KBS2's 2008 teen dramaJungle Fish.[6][7] The drama won a number of awards, including thePeabody Award.[8]
In 2006, Hwang auditioned to joinJYP Entertainment's audition programSuperstar Survival and would meet future bandmatesJunho andTaecyeon.[9] He was offered a trainee contract despite being eliminated.[10]
In 2008, he took part inMnet'sHot Blood Men which follows the extreme training of 13 trainees in order to become a member of the boy bandOne Day.One Day spawned two boy bands,2AM and 2PM, of which the latter Hwang became a member. Six months afterHot Blood was aired on TV,2PM debuted with their first single "10점 만점에 10점" ("10 Points out of 10 Points")[11] from their firstEPHottest Time of the Day, but it wasn't until their second EP2:00PM Time For Change which skyrocketed their success in the Korean music industry. As of 2017, the group has released six studio albums in Korea and four studio albums in Japan.
In 2011, Hwang making a cameo appearance inDream High as Oh-sun's imaginary boy (episode 12)[12] and Japanese dramaKaitō Royale as Jack[13]
On January 23, 2013, Hwang had a supporting role in a spy romantic comedy series,7th Grade Civil Servant as Gong Do-ha.[14][15][16] The same year, Hwang takes on the role of a newbie gangster Hyeong-ju in Your Noir.[17]
In 2015 he making a cameo appearance inDream Knight episode 12.[18]
In 2016, Hwang was cast in the romantic-comedy dramaMy Horrible Boss as Nam Bong-gi, after two and a half years since the 2013 dramaYour Noir[19] and made another impressive cameo appearance in the SBS dramaDr. Romantic.[20]
In 2017 he was casting for a special cameo appearance as Eun Bong Hee's (Nam Ji Hyun) ex-boyfriend in SBS dramaSuspicious Partner[21][22] and he appeared in KBS2's dramaQueen for Seven Days as Seo No, the bodyguard and friend of Lee Yeok (Yeon Woo Jin).[citation needed] The same year, he made his official debut as a stage actor for the playMy Love, My Bride[23] and musicalAltar Boyz in Japan, Hwang played the role of the band's leader Matthew.[24]
In 2018 Hwang starred in TvN DramaWhat's Wrong with Secretary Kim[25] and he was given two awards after his work, Hallyu Star Award and Male Excellence Award at the11th Korea Drama Awards.[26] He then starred in promotionalweb series produced forLotte Duty Free Shop,Secret Queen Makers in the first and second episodes.[27]
In 2018, he made a cameo appearance in the romantic-comedy dramaTouch Your Heart he played the role of a delivery man who catches the eye of timid lawyer Dan Moon Hee (Park Kyung Hye).[28]
On February 7, 2020, Hwang starred Netflix seriesMy Holo Love[29][30]
In 2021, Hwang andNichkhun made special cameo appearances inVincenzo to support their bandmateOk Taec-yeon, who landed a role in the series.[31]
On April 30, 2021, Hwang's dramaSo I Married the Anti-fan premiered onNaver TV, with simultaneous broadcast throughV Live and global platformsiQIYI,Viki andAmazon Prime Video in Japan[32] The drama was originally filmed in 2018[33] and based on the 2010 novelSo I Married The Anti Fan, which was made into a webtoon and also adapted into a Chinese film[34]
On December 15, 2021, Hwang announced that he would be ending his contract withJYP Entertainment in January 2022.[35] On March 3, 2022, Hwang signed an exclusive contract with L' July Entertainment.[36]
In August 2022, Hwang opened the YouTube cooking channel 'Yochan Lee.[37]
In December 2022, Hwang will hold his first solo photo exhibition 'NAHC NAHC' at the exhibition hall on the 3rd floor of AK Plaza in Hongdae from January 6 to 12, 2023.[38]
Hwang speaks fluent Korean, intermediate Japanese, and basic English.
On June 1, 2012, JYP Entertainment announced through their official Twitter that Hwang will be opening a fitness center with his weight trainer, Hwang Mo.[39] The fitness center is located in Nonhyun-dong (논현동), Seoul.[40]
Hwang took an undergraduate program atHowon University (Gunsan, South Korea) with his bandmatesJunho andWooyoung.[41][42] In addition, along with Junho, he is continuing a master's degree of cinematography atSejong University.[43]
Hwang enlisted in the Army for his mandatory military service on June 11, 2019,[44] and was discharged on January 5, 2021.[45]
On December 15, 2021, it was announced that Hwang's fiancée is pregnant and they would be getting married early next year.[46] Their first child, a daughter, was born on July 26, 2022.[47]
