Chandrachur Singh (born 11 October 1968) is an Indian actor, who mainly works inHindi cinema.[1] He is the recipient of aFilmfare Award, in addition to receiving nomination for anIIFA Award and aScreen Award.
Singh is the son of Baldev Singh, a formerMLA fromKhair, a town inAligarh,Uttar Pradesh, and Krishna Kumari Devi from the royal family of the princely state ofPatna in current-dayOdisha.[2]
Singh attended the all-boys boarding schoolThe Doon School inDehradun, and then went toSt. Stephen's College,University of Delhi.[3] Later, he prepared theUPSC entrance examination aiming to be anIAS officer.[2] In the early 1990s, Singh, a trained classical singer, taught music atVasant Valley School and history at his alma mater, The Doon School.[4][5]
Singh made his acting debut in 1996 inTere Mere Sapne which was produced underAmitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited.[6][7] Later that year he starred alongsideTabu inMaachis for which he won theFilmfare Award for Best Male Debut.[8] He appeared in several films as a leading actor which failed to do well, but he had success with his lead roles in the multi-starersDaag: The Fire (1999)[9][10] oppositeSanjay Dutt,Kya Kehna (2000)[11][12][13] oppositePreity Zinta andJosh (2000) oppositeAishwarya Rai andShah Rukh Khan, for which he won many popular votes.[14] He was nominated for Filmfare Awards on two occasions, in different categories.
After initial successes, his career went into a low, because of multiple dislocations of his shoulder joint, which he suffered while water skiing inGoa. Because of the pain on his shoulder, he couldn't work out or stay fit which caused him to gain weight and lose roles.[15] His last few releases includedAamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyaa (2001),[16][17]Bharat Bhagya Vidhata (2002) and the delayed releaseSarhad Paar which was shot in 2002 and released in 2006. All three films flopped at the box office.[18]
In 2012, he made a comeback with the multi-starer filmChaar Din Ki Chandni.[19] The film featuredTusshar Kapoor,Kulraj Randhawa,Anupam Kher,Om Puri andFarida Jalal in lead roles.Chaar Din Ki Chandni received a mixed response from critics, and turned out to be a flop at most places in India. Singh also played a role in the 2012 English-language filmThe Reluctant Fundamentalist, directed byMira Nair.[20] He then appeared inZilla Ghaziabad which had been delayed for years, and finally released in August 2013.[21][22][23][24]
In 2020, he made his big acting comeback withDisney+ Hotstar crime drama television seriesAarya, oppositeSushmita Sen.[1][25] It was directed byRam Madhvani.[26]
