Chaetocercus is agenus ofhummingbirds in the familyTrochilidae.
The genusChaetocercus was introduced in 1855 by the English zoologistGeorge Robert Gray with therufous-shafted woodstar as thetype species.[1][2] The name is a combination of theAncient Greek wordskhaitē, meaning "hair" andkerkos, meaning "tail".[3]

All these species, except for the rufous-shafted woodstar, were formerly placed in the genusAcestrura.[5] In 1999 Karl-Ludwig Schuchmann remarked in theHandbook of the Birds of the World that for the species placed inAcestrura: "...no evidence in external morphology justifies treatment in a genus separate fromC. jourdanii".[6]
