Charles Davis Lowe II (born January 15, 1968)[2] is an American actor and director. He is the younger brother of actorRob Lowe. He won anEmmy Award for his supporting role inLife Goes On as a young man living with HIV. He has had recurring roles onER,Melrose Place, andNow and Again. Lowe playedDeputy White House Chief of StaffReed Pollock on the sixth season of24,[3] and playedByron Montgomery onPretty Little Liars.

Early life

Lowe was born inDayton, Ohio,[2] the son of Barbara Lynn Wilson (née Hepler; 1939–2003), a teacher, and Charles Davis Lowe, a trial lawyer.[1] His parents divorced when Lowe was young.[4] He has an older brother, actorRob Lowe, and two half brothers from the second marriages of his parents, the producer Micah Dyer (maternal) and Justin Lowe (paternal). Lowe wasbaptized in theEpiscopal Church.[5] He is ofGerman,English,Irish,Scottish, andWelsh ancestry.[6]

Lowe was raised in a "traditional midwestern setting"[5] in Dayton, attending Oakwood Junior High School, before moving to the Point Dume area of Malibu, California, with his mother and brother. He attendedSanta Monica High School, the same high school as fellow actorsHolly Robinson Peete,Emilio Estevez,Charlie Sheen,Sean Penn,Chris Penn, andRobert Downey Jr.[4]

Career

Lowe began his acting career in the 1980s when he appeared in a number oftelevision films. Lowe co-starred withCharlie Sheen in the 1984CBS Television dramaSilence of the Heart.[3] In 1988 he co-starred withTommy Lee Jones andRobert Urich in the made-for-TV filmApril Morning, which depicted thebattle of Lexington in theAmerican Revolutionary War.[7] Lowe played the titular character in the short-livedsitcomSpencer, which he left after six episodes.[8]

From 1991 to 1993, he starred inLife Goes On, for which he received thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1993.[9]

Lowe had recurring roles onMelrose Place,Popular,Now and Again, andER, and guest-starring roles onTouched by an Angel,Superman,CSI: Miami andMedium.[3] Lowe's feature film appearances have included roles inNobody's Perfect,True Blood,Quiet Days in Hollywood,Floating, andUnfaithful.[3] In 2000, he portrayed iconic singerJohn Denver in the television filmTake Me Home. That year he also wrote and directed theshort filmThe Audition.[10] Lowe made his feature film directorial debut in 2007 withBeautiful Ohio.[3] Lowe has directed episodes ofBones,Brothers & Sisters,Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,Hack,Without a Trace, andPretty Little Liars.[3]

In April 2010, Lowe replacedAlexis Denisof as Aria's father, Byron Montgomery, inPretty Little Liars.[11]

Personal life

While filmingQuiet Days in Hollywood, Lowe met actressHilary Swank. They married on September 28, 1997.[12] On January 9, 2006, Lowe and Swank announced their separation,[12] and in May 2006, they announced their intention to divorce.[13] The divorce was finalized on November 1, 2007.[14] Swank infamously forgot to thank Lowe during her acceptance speech after winning her firstAcademy Award in 2000 (forBoys Don't Cry).[15] Upon winning her second Oscar in 2005, forMillion Dollar Baby, Lowe was the first person she thanked.[16]

On January 19, 2007, a representative announced that Lowe was dating producer Kim Painter.[17] Lowe and Painter's daughter was born on May 16, 2009.[18] Lowe and Painter were married on August 28, 2010, in a small ceremony in Los Angeles.[19] They welcomed their second daughter on November 15, 2012.[20] Their third daughter was born on March 18, 2016.[citation needed]
