The constituencies were created in 1999 with the names and boundaries ofWestminster constituencies, as existing in at that time.[3] They cover all of twocouncil areas,[4] theFalkirk council area and theNorth Lanarkshire council area, and parts of three others, theEast Ayrshire council area, theEast Dumbartonshire council area and theSouth Lanarkshire council area.
The rest of the East Ayrshire council area is within the South of Scotland region, the rest of the East Dunbartonshire council area is within theWest of Scotland region, and the rest of the South Lanarkshire council area is within theGlasgow andSouth of Scotland regions.
