Céngkok (Javanese:ꦕꦺꦁꦏꦺꦴꦏ꧀,romanized: Céngkok) (old orthography:tjengkok) are patterns played by theelaborating instruments used inIndonesianJavanesegamelan. They aremelodic formula that lead to asèlèh,[1] following the rules of thepathet of the piece.
The most elaboratecengkok repertoire is that of thegendér barung. Thegambang andsiter, on the other hand, do not have such formalized sets ofcengkok, and therefore may vary more from performer to performer.
Mostcengkok derive from the vocal repertoire, and many have names that originally came fromlyrics, like the well-known "Ayu kuning". They may incorporate pre-existent melodic patterns through a process ofcentonization.
