Early life and education

[edit]

Celeste Epiphany Waite was born inCulver City, California, on 5 May 1994, to an English mother and aJamaican father.[7][8][9] Her mother had been working as amake-up artist in the U.S., after graduating from beauty school in London.[10][11] Her father had moved to the U.S. from Jamaica to be with his mother while she studied at university.[10] Following her parents' separation, Celeste moved to her mother's native United Kingdom, settling inDagenham at the age of three,[8] before moving to the village ofSaltdean on the outskirts ofBrighton at the age of five, where she spent most of her early years.[12][13]

At the age of 10, Celeste spent a year doing ballet at a performing arts school.[14] She recalls becoming interested in music through discoveringAretha Franklin, whose music was played throughout her family home, before discovering her own music from names such asThelonious Monk,Koko Taylor through YouTube andiTunes at the age of 14.[15][16][13] Celeste recalls singing hymns at church in Brighton as one of her earliest musical memories.[17] When Celeste was 16, her father died of lung cancer, aged 49.[9]

Celeste's localSaltdean charity shop where she worked at age 17.[18]

As a teenager, Celeste would write music and perform in bands.[19] She "accidentally" wrote her first song, "Sirens", with her former bandmates at the age of 16. The song was inspired by the death of her father and was published to YouTube where it got the attention of her current manager.[13][8][20] Her manager arranged studio sessions for her atSarm West Studios inNotting Hill,[20] where the crew would give her more time in the studio.[8] At 18, she started working in the studio after she graduated and began taking her music career seriously,[13] while playing her first gigs in and aroundBrighton.[21] Celeste studiedMusic Technology atVarndean College for hersixth form education.[22]

Celeste toldAnnie Mac that while her friends asked for driving lessons as their 18th birthday gift, she asked for aMacBook laptop which she would later use to begin recording herself onGarageBand.[23][non-primary source needed] Celeste published her firstSoundCloud song, "Born Again" to the platform in July 2014.[24] The song, which was produced byTev'n, was described byJim Carroll ofThe Irish Times as "a striking blast of soulful, seductive vocals backed by a ghostly electronic r'n'b groove."[25] Throughout 2014, Celeste published more songs such as "DEVIL" and "What's Your Poison?",[26][27] the latter of which is the only 2014 song that remains on her SoundCloud account.[28] In November 2014, she compiled those three songs into a four-track self-titled EP to the platform. The EP which was described byVice as a "combination of melancholic pop and glitchy electronic tracks."[29] Celeste also started herBBC musical journey when she uploaded her song "North Circular" onto theBBC Music Introducing website in 2014,[30] where it gained support from DJs onBBC Radio 1.[31] She featured on British dance producerTieks' 2014 debut single "Sing That Song" which reached No. 90 on theUK Singles Chart.[32] She also featured on Swedish musicianAvicii's song "Touch Me" in 2015, prior to making her solo mononymous debut.[33] It was during this time that Celeste assisted electronic duoReal Lies as a vocalist while they toured withFoals in 2015.[11]

Celeste completed herGCE Advanced Levels in Music and Textiles in 2016 before working at the local pub inRottingdean.[34][10]
