Cecilia Edith Rotenberg Gutkin (born 8 August 1956), known professionally asCecilia Roth (Spanish pronunciation:[seˈsiljarot]) is an Argentine actress. She is the winner of twoGoya Awards and aEuropean Film Award. She is known for being an "Almodóvar girl" and the "muse" ofFito Páez during the 1990s.

Roth's father, Abrasha Rotenberg, is ofUkrainian Jewish origin, having moved in the 1930s toBuenos Aires, where he worked as a writer, editor, and journalist. Cecilia's mother, Dina Gutkin, known asDina Rot, a singer, was born inMendoza and spent her childhood inSantiago de Chile. Her brother,Argentine musicianAriel Rot, is a former member of the Spanish-Argentine supergroupLos Rodríguez and lives in Spain.

She began as an actress inArgentina, until 1976 when she fled themilitary dictatorship and moved to Spain. Roth has had great success in Spanish film since her first appearances inLas verdes praderas (The Green Meadows), byJosé Luis Garci;Arrebato (Rapture), byIván Zulueta; andLaberinto de pasiones (Labyrinth of Passion) byPedro Almodóvar. Her most prominent movies includeUn lugar en el mundo (A place in the world) andMartín (hache), both byAdolfo Aristarain. In 1980 she worked with Almodovar on "Pepi, Luci, Bom" and, later, in "All About My Mother", which earned Almodóvar his first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and “Pain and Glory”.[1]

She is also known for her leading role inTodo sobre mi madre (All about my mother), byAlmodóvar. Roth wonGoya Awards for Best Actress with both directors. Roth has also made noteworthy appearances in numerous television series, including the soap operasPor amor (For love), together withArnaldo André and Marita Ballesteros, andNueve lunas (Nine moons). She appeared in the mini-seriesLaura y Zoe together withSusú Pecoraro,Epitafios(Epitaphs) withJulio Chávez andLeonardo Sbaraglia, andTratame bien(Treat me nice) again with Chávez.

Roth was first married to Gonzalo Gil, then later married toArgentine singer-songwriterFito Páez for some years, with whom she adopted a child, Martín.Joaquin Sabina composed the song "Cecilia" for Roth and Páez.[2] In addition to her career in film and television, Roth has also worked in theater in Argentina, as well as in Spain. She is currently working, together withDarío Grandinetti, on thePhilippe Blasband play,Una relación pornográfica.

In 2020, Roth played the main role in the filmAlice, where she portrays Alicia Caloso, a dermatologist who commits suicide after developing an addiction to cosmetic procedures. The film, written by actorGuillermo Pfening, is based on Pfening's own mother and her mental health struggles with that problem.[3]
