Cathal Malone (born 1992) is an Irishhurler who plays forClare Senior Championship clubSixmilebridge and at inter-county level with theClare senior hurling team.[1] He usually lines out at midfield.
Malone first played hurling to a high standard as a student atSt. Flannan's College inEnnis. He lined out for the college in all grades, including theHarty Cup.[2] Malone later played with theUniversity of Limerick in theFitzgibbon Cup.[3]
At club level, Malone first enjoyed success as aGaelic footballer with theEnnistymon club, winning aClare U21AFC medal in 2010.[4] The absence of a senior hurling team in Ennistymon resulted in Malone joining theSixmilebridge club. He has since won fourClare SHC medals.[5]
Malone first appeared on the inter-county scene withClare at minor level. He was right wing-forward on the team beaten byKilkenny in the2010 All-Ireland minor final.[6] Malone progressed to theunder-21 team and won back-to-backAll-Ireland U21HC medals as a substitute in 2012 and on the field of play in 2013.[7][8]
Malone was just a year out of the under-21 grade when he was drafted onto thesenior team. He was a member of the Clare team that won theNational League title in 2016.[9] Malone was nominated forAll-Stars in 2020 and 2021.[10]
On 21 July 2024, he started in midfield as Clare won theAll-Ireland for the first time in 11 years after an extra-time win againstCork by 3-29 to 1-34, claiming their fifth All-Ireland title.[11][12][13]
