TheSanta Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) was opened in 1947 by NAA in the nearbySimi Hills, to land-test forerunner andRocketdyne engines. TheAtomics International division began nuclear research and processing there in the 1950s. Closed since 2006, SSFL is a major state "Superfund" site for the cleanup of chemicals and radionuclides in the soil and groundwater, by Boeing, NASA, and DOE.}}
