TheNew Jersey Meadowlands District is located approximately five miles (8 km) west ofNew York City inNorth Jersey. The district is composed of 19,730 acres (79.8 km2), approximately 31 mi2, of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson counties. The District is bordered byU.S. Route 46 on the north, RoutesU.S. Route 1/9 (Tonnelle Avenue) and the freight rail line owned byNorfolk Southern Railway andCSX Transportation Corp. (the former Conrail main line) on the east, thePort Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) commuter rail lines andPulaski Skyway on the south, andRoute 17, thePascack Valley Line, and the Kingsland rail line on the west.
TheNew Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC; originally the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission) was established in 1969 to oversee development in theNew Jersey Meadowlands and to ensure that the newly appreciatedwetlands, and their flora and fauna, would be able to survive as a thriving ecological network after decades of industrial abuse and neglect. In 2015 NJMC was merged with theNew Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which continues to manageland development in the district.
The District is now home to more than 265 different species of birds and is recognized as a major migratory fly-over and resting preserve. Shellfish and finfish have returned in abundance.
