Several unrelated groups ofsongbirds are calledcatbirds because of their wailing calls, which resemble acat'smeowing. Thegenus nameAiluroedus likewise is from theGreek for 'cat-singer' or 'cat-voiced'.[1]

Australasian catbirds are thegeneraAiluroedus and themonotypicScenopooetes. They belong to thebowerbirdfamily (Ptilonorhynchidae) of thebasal songbirds:

New World catbirds are two monotypic genera from themimid family (Mimidae) of thepasseridan superfamilyMuscicapoidea. Among the Mimidae, they represent independent basal lineages probably closer to the Caribbeanthrasher andtrembler assemblage than to themockingbirds andToxostoma thrashers:[2]

TheAbyssinian catbird (Sylvia galinieri) is found inAfrica. It was previously considered to represent a monotypic genusParophasma.[3]
