Carsten Träger (born 25 October 1973) is a German politician of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD) who has served as a member of theBundestag from the state ofBavaria since 2013.[1]
In addition to his work in parliament, Träger has been serving asParliamentary State Secretary at theFederal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Climate Protection and Nuclear Safety in thegovernment ofChancellorFriedrich Merz since 2025.[2]
Träger first became a member of the Bundestag in the2013 German federal election.[3] He is a member of the Committee on Food and Agriculture and the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.[4][5] Since 2018, he has been his parliamentary group's spokesperson on environmental policy.
In addition to his committee assignments, Träger has been a member of the German delegation to theFranco-German Parliamentary Assembly since 2019. Since 2022, he has been one of the founding members of a cross-party group promoting aOne Health approach.[6]
In the negotiations to form acoalition government under the leadership ofChancellorAngela Merkel following the2017 federal elections, Träger was part of the working group on energy, climate protection and the environment, led byArmin Laschet,Georg Nüßlein andBarbara Hendricks.
In the negotiations to form a so-calledtraffic light coalition of the SPD, theGreen Party and theFree Democratic Party (FDP) following the2021 federal elections, Träger was part of his party's delegation in the working group onenvironmental policy, co-chaired byRita Schwarzelühr-Sutter,Steffi Lemke andStefan Birkner.[7]
Within the SPD parliamentary group, Träger andCarolin Wagner have been leading the Bundestag group of SPD parliamentarians from Bavaria since 2023.[8]
