Carlton Vale is a street that runs throughKilburn andMaida Vale in London.[1] Some of its route forms the boundary between theCity of Westminster to the south and theLondon Borough of Brent to the north. To the west the street continues asKilburn Lane throughQueen's Park, while to the east it becomesCarlton Hill running intoSt. John's Wood. Carlton Vale crosses or meets several roads including Kilburn Park Road, Cambridge Road andRandolph Avenue.
Carlton was a popular name in theRegency era and beyond, suggesting an "ambience of elegance" linked to theCarlton House residence of thePrince Regent.[2] The street was developed in the mid-nineteenth century and was originally known asCarlton Road.[3] Most of the original buildings wereVictorian, although few survive today. TheAnglo-CatholicSt. Augustine's Church was built just north of Carlton Vale to serve the growing population of the area. To the south of the street isPaddington Recreation Ground.
The street suffered heavily fromGerman bombing during theSecond World War, and was rebuilt in thepostwar era withmodernist buildings. Particularly notable is theSouth Kilburn estate. TheCarlton Tavern pub was built in the 1920s by theCharrington Brewery. Demolished in 2015 shortly before it was about to belisted, it was rebuilt in its original form and reopened in 2021.
Unlike Carlton Vale, Carlton Hill retains many of its original buildings a number of which are nowlisted.[4][5][6] Notable residents have included thetextile designerC.F.A. Voysey who is now commemorated with ablue plaque[7] and the sculptorArthur Fleischmann whose house features a City of Westminster plaque. The former Blenheim Armspublic house, built in the 1840s, is located at the junction withLoudoun Road.
