Carlijn Achtereekte (Dutch pronunciation:[kɑrˈlɛinˈɑxtərˌeːktə]; born 29 January 1990) is a Dutch formerspeed skater and currentroad cyclist, who currently rides forUCI Women's WorldTeamVisma–Lease a Bike.[1][2][3] Achtereekte won three silver medals in the 5000 metres at theDutch Single Distance Championships. At the2015 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships inHeerenveen, she won the silver medal at the5000 metres event behindMartina Sáblíková.[4] Currently Achtereekte is a professionalcyclist, competing forTeam Jumbo–Visma.
At the2018 Winter Olympics, her first Olympic Games, Achtereekte took a surprise gold medal in the3000 metres, leading home team-matesIreen Wüst andAntoinette de Jong in a Dutch clean sweep of the podium, despite never having won aWorld Cup race.[5] On 23 March 2018 she was awardedKnight of the Order of Orange-Nassau byKing Willem-Alexander.[6]
