Carina Tyrrell (born 24 October 1989) is a British-Swisspublic healthphysician,[1]investor,[2] philanthropist, and Fellow at theUniversity of Cambridge who was crownedMiss England andMiss United Kingdom in 2014. Tyrrell graduated from theUniversity of Cambridge with first-class honours,[3] featured on the front page ofThe Times for her work to deliver theOxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine,[4] and is known for making international news for being the first woman from one of the world's top universities, to participate inMiss World.[5]
Tyrrell was born inGeneva,Switzerland, and attended theInternational School of Geneva where she learned to speak French fluently. In 2009, she went on to studyNatural Sciences at theUniversity of Cambridge graduating fromMurray Edwards College, Cambridge.
She readmedicine atCambridge University Medical School where she graduated with aBachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB BChir), aMaster of Public Health (MPH),[6] and was featured as one of the most impressive students by theBusiness Insider.[7]
Tyrrell supported the delivery of theOxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine,[8] having worked during theCOVID-19 pandemic collaborating withOxford University to analyse data from hundreds of vaccine and treatment trials all over the world.
An expert in global public health,[9] Tyrrell published several papers on identifying and managing emerging respiratory viruses during time with the OxfordNuffield Department of Population Health,[10] and theWorld Health OrganizationGlobal Outbreak Alert and Response Network.[11]
In 2016, she spent several years working as a physician atOxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust before returning to theCambridge Biomedical Campus[12] where she worked with technology companiesHuma and Drawbridge Health on their product validation.[13]
Tyrrell is a healthcare and technology investor and founder, having worked atGoldman Sachs in London and Walden Catalyst Ventures across Palo Alto, Tel Aviv, Berlin, Geneva, and London.[14]
Tyrrell works as Investor and Chief of Staff at Walden Catalyst, a $550 million early-stage deep techventure capital fund led by the CEO ofIntel and former President ofSamsung,Lip-Bu Tan andYoung Sohn, respectively.[15]
Tyrrell is a Governor forCambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Council Member of theRoyal Society of Medicine, Public Health and Epidemiology Section, and a former president of theCambridge University Global Health Society.[16]
She has appeared onBBC News,ITV News,Sky News,BBC Radio 4, and has been featured inThe Times,Business Insider, andThe Daily Telegraph.[17]
Having declared herself a feminist, Tyrrell faced criticism fromGermaine Greer, herself aCambridge University graduate.[18] Tyrrell used her profile as a women's rights advocate[19] to help raise millions in funding for women and children, health and innovation causes.[20]
An ambassador for homeless charities, Tyrrell slept rough on the streets of Cambridge[21] during theMiss World competition to raise awareness of homelessness.[22] Tyrrell has undertaken humanitarian projects in countries around the world including India, Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Rwanda.[23]
