Carignan (French pronunciation: [kaʁiɲɑ̃] ⓘ ) is acommune in theArdennes department in northernFrance . It is the seat of acanton . It was known as Yvoy or Yvois until 1662.
Carignan was, under the nameEpoissium ,Eposium ,Epusum orIvosium , a military settlement of theRomans .Gaugericus ,bishop of Cambrai , was born in Eposium around 550. A little later it was the home of astylite ascetic namedWulflaich .
AsYvois , it was part of theBurgundian Netherlands in the 15th century. It changed hands between theHabsburg Netherlands andFrance several times, until it was assigned to France by the 1659Treaty of the Pyrenees . The town was given as a duchy toPrince Eugène-Maurice of Savoy-Carignan , and renamedCarignan in 1662.[ 3]
