careFIJI is amobile software application developed by the Government of Fiji to assist theMinistry of Health and Medical Services in combating the ongoingCOVID-19 pandemic in Fiji.[1] The mobile app is available onGoogle Play and theApp Store.[2]
The app was part of the second phase of Fiji's COVID-19 response to help theMinistry of Health in its contact tracing efforts.[3] It was launched in June 2020 byPrime MinisterFrank Bainimarama.[4] Minister for HealthIfereimi Waqainabete said that the app would be important to contain any future spread ofCOVID-19.[5] In light of the first community case confirmed on 19 April 2021, the Permanent Secretary for Health DrJames Fong has emphasized the use of the app.[6] On 6 February 2022, the government announced that the app will not be required for contact tracing anymore.[7]
The app is based on theTraceTogether mobile application developed by theSingaporean Government.[8] It usesbluetooth technology to track encounters between users and the data is anonymous and encrypted.[9] The app is equipped with the QR check-in and check-out feature which allow individuals to scanQR codes in entry and exit of any business.[10]
