Carcathiocerta (Armenian:Կարկաթիոկերտ, Karkatiokert or Արկաթիակերտ, Arkatiakert;Ancient Greek:Καρκαθιόκερτα, Karkathiokerta) was a city inArmenianSophene near theTigris, identified with the modern town ofEğil. It was the first capital of Sophene untilArsames I founded the new capitalArshamshat around 230 BCE. The Seleucid kingAntiochus IV Epiphanes renamed the city intoEpiphania.[citation needed]Strabo in hisGeography, calls it "The royal city of Sophene".[1] It was assigned to the lateRoman province ofMesopotamia.[2] It also bore the namesArtagigarta,Baras,Basileon Phrourion, andIngila.[3] Under the nameIngila, it became a bishopric; no longer the seat of a residential bishop, it remains atitular see of theRoman Catholic Church.[4]
Its site is located atEğil inAsiatic Turkey.[3][2]
