Thecarboxypenicillins are a group ofantibiotics. They belong to thepenicillin family and comprise the memberscarbenicillin andticarcillin.[1]
The carboxypenicillins feature thebeta-lactam backbone of all penicillins but also feature acarboxylic acid orcarboxylic acid ester group in the variable side-chain.[citation needed]
The carboxypenicillins exhibit activity againstGram negative organisms includingPseudomonas aeruginosa andProteus species. They are inactive against certainGram positive pathogens such asStaphylococcus aureus,Enterococcus faecalis, andL. monocytogenes. The carboxypenicillins arebeta-lactamase sensitive.[citation needed]
