
TheCanton River is a river passing throughCanton, Massachusetts.[1] It flows into theNeponset River,[1] connecting Bolivar Pond and Forge Pond.[1]
It traces downWashington[citation needed] and Neponset Streets (flowing under theCanton Viaduct),[2] and continues down Walpole Street.[citation needed] It is atributary of theNeponset River, with a few tributaries on the side.[citation needed] It is also called theEast Branch of the Neponset River.[2] The viaduct, built in 1835, became part of the path for theBoston and Providence Railroad.[3]
The Canton River was home to severalgunpowder mills andgristmills as early as 1703, as the area that would become Canton was first settled.[4]
In 2011, a public fish consumption advisory was issued for the river due to on high levels ofpolychlorinated biphenyls andDDT.[5]
