TheCampeonato Pernambucano is the top-flight professionalstate football league in the Brazilianstate ofPernambuco. It is run by thePernambuco Football Federation (FPF).
The first edition of the Campeonato Pernambucano was played in 1915, and was won byFlamengo de Recife, a defunct club.
In 1936, Tramways became undefeated state champions with a team made up of players who were paid a salary.[1] This led to significant changes in the structure of football in Pernambuco, heralding the definitive transition fromamateurism toprofessionalism.[1] The following season, Central's defender Zago became the first player to be registered as a professional by the Pernambuco Sports Federation, marking the official start of professionalism in the state.[1]
