Camilla Belle Routh (born October 2, 1986), known professionally asCamilla Belle, is an American actress. Born and raised inLos Angeles,California, Belle began her acting career with appearances in numeroustelevision commercials before landing her first lead role inNBC's thriller,Trapped Beneath the Earth in 1992. She has since appeared in a variety of films and television shows, includingThe Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997),Practical Magic (1998),Rip Girls (2000) and10,000 BC (2008). Belle has also been recognized for her work in independent films such asThe Quiet (2005) andThe Mad Whale (2017).

In addition to her acting career, Belle has been the face ofVera Wang's "Princess"fragrance and has appeared in advertisements for brands such asNespresso andCotton. She is also known for her fashion choices, having been featured on the cover of numerousfashion magazines and being the recipient of Young Hollywood Style Icon award at the2011 Young Hollywood Awards.[1] Belle's personal life, including her relationships and herbilingual upbringing inEnglish andPortuguese, has also garnered media attention.

Early life

An only child, Belle was born on October 2, 1986[2][3] to Deborah Cristina Gould of a Brazilian background[4] and Jack Wesley Routh, acountry music performer and composer. She attendedMarlborough School, an all-girl high school in Los Angeles.[5] She grew up speaking English and Portuguese.[6] During her childhood, she frequently visited her mother's family in Brazil.[7] She was raised in her mother's devout Roman Catholic faith.[8]

Career

Belle began her career as a child actor appearing in television commercials for brands such asCabbage Patch Kids,Campbell's Soup,Public Broadcasting System and Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical. At age five, Belle landed her first lead role in a film, theNBC thriller filmTrouble Shooter: Trapped Beneath the Earth (1993).[3] In 1995, she appeared inA Little Princess based on the novel of the same name. In thescience fiction filmThe Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), she played Cathy Bowman, a young wealthy British girl attacked by a pack ofCompsognathus. In 1998, she played Aubrey Shepard on theFocus on the Family radio dramaAdventures in Odyssey. Following a turn asSteven Seagal's daughter inThe Patriot (1998), she earned a 1999Young Artist Award nomination for her portrayal ofSandra Bullock's character as a girl inPractical Magic (1998), as well as another nomination the same year for her guest appearance on the television seriesWalker: Texas Ranger.

She received her third and fourth Young Artist Award nominations respectively for the television filmReplacing Dad (1999) and for her first lead role, in theDisney Channel television filmRip Girls (2000).[9] Belle played the lead role in the television filmBack to the Secret Garden (2001), then took a break from acting before returning with a role in the independent filmThe Quiet (2005).[10]SFStation wrote that "performance-wiseThe Quiet belongs to Camilla Belle andElisha Cuthbert".[11] In 2006, she signed a multi-year contract to become the face ofVera Wang's "Princess" fragrance, appearing in print advertisements and television commercials.[12] Her contract ended in July 2009.[13][14]

She portrayed the lead role of sixteen-year-old Jill Johnson in the remake ofWhen a Stranger Calls (2006).[15] Belle plays a babysitter who receives threatening phone calls from an unidentified stranger.[16] The film grossed $67.1 million at the worldwide box office.[16] In 2007, she appeared in coffee brandNespresso's television commercial alongside actorGeorge Clooney.[17] She then played a lead role in theRoland Emmerich-directed action-adventure film10,000 BC (2008)[18] that grossed $269 million at the worldwide box office.[19]

In April 2012, Belle signed on to appear inCotton Incorporated's "The Fabric of My Life" campaign with actressEmmy Rossum.[20] Belle's advertisement was inspired by her hometown, Los Angeles and she also sang in it.[21][22] In November 2016, Belle appeared as a guest judge onBravo's television seriesProject Runway, in the episode "A Power Trip".[23] She played Isabel Wallace in the drama-thriller filmThe Mad Whale (2017), a student project produced byJames Franco's Elysium Bandini Studios and theUSC School of Cinematic Arts.[24] In 2022, she portrayed Pearl Serrano on the third season ofNBC‘s crime drama seriesLaw & Order: Organized Crime and played Agnes in theNetflix original filmCarter (2022).[25]

Belle starred as Carina inFox's streaming platformTubi's originalromantic comedy film10 Truths About Love (2022), which anchored the platform'sValentine's Day programming event.[26][27][28][29] On September 9, 2023, the film was released byGreat American Family channel and renamed asLove Can Surprise You.[30][31][32] She appeared as the female lead inBen Barnes' music video for the song "Beloved", released on November 1, 2024.[33]

Belle's appearance and fashion choices have been a subject of media attention.[34][35] She has appeared on the cover of numerous fashion magazines, includingTeen Vogue,Elle,Harper's Bazaar,Tatler,Ocean Drive,Glamour,Nylon,Vanidades,Lucky,ES Magazine andGenlux.[citation needed] She is a frequent guest star atNew York Fashion Week, among other fashion events.[36] She has also been arunway model forAlberta Ferretti[37][38] andThe Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection.[39]

Her style has received noteworthy praise from periodicals such asCosmopolitan,InStyle andPeople.[40][41] In 2007,People magazine named her "Fashionista of the Week" during Mercedes-Benz Fall Fashion Week inNew York City.[42]People wrote that Belle "managed to look appropriate and fashion-forward at every event she went to this week, includingMax Azria,Oscar de la Renta andMiss Sixty."[42] Belle has never worked with a professional stylist and credits her mother as her stylist instead.[43] In her fashion choices, Belle and her mother are inspired byElizabeth Taylor andOld Hollywood.[44] She received the Young Hollywood Style Icon award at theYoung Hollywood Awards in May 2011.[1]

Personal life

Belle dated singerJoe Jonas from September 2008 to July 2009.[45][46] They met during filming theJonas Brothers music video "Lovebug" in which she appears as the lead actress.[46] Belle briefly dated American footballerTim Tebow from October to December 2012.[47]
