Camila Carraro Mendes[2] (/kəˈmləˈmɛndɛz/;Brazilian Portuguese:[ˈmẽdʒis]; born June 29, 1994)[2] is an American actress. She made her acting debut portrayingVeronica Lodge onThe CW teen drama seriesRiverdale (2017–2023), for which she won aTeen Choice Award in 2017. Mendes transitioned her career to film, taking on supporting roles inThe New Romantic (2018),The Perfect Date (2019), andPalm Springs (2020). She has since played leading roles in the black comedy filmDo Revenge (2022), and the romantic comediesUpgraded (2024) andMúsica (2024), also serving as an executive producer for the latter two.

Early life

Mendes was born on June 29, 1994, inCharlottesville, Virginia,[3] to Brazilian parents.[4] Her father is a business executive and her mother is a flight attendant. She has an older sister.[2][5] Shortly after her birth, the family moved toAtlanta,Georgia, then back to Virginia, and then toOrlando, Florida.[6] Due to her father's job and later her parents' divorce, Mendes moved 16 times growing up, but lived mainly in Florida.[7] At the age of 10, she lived inBrazil for a year.[7] Mendes attended the Fine Arts program at theAmerican Heritage School inPlantation, Florida, graduating in 2012.[8] In May 2016, Mendes graduated fromNew York University Tisch School of the Arts.[9][10][11]

Career

Mendes' first acting job was a commercial forIKEA.[12] In 2016, Mendes was cast as "silver-tongued high school sophomore"Veronica Lodge inThe CW's teen drama seriesRiverdale (2017–2023), a subversive take on theArchie Comics.[13] For her performance she won theTeen Choice Award for Choice Scene Stealer in 2017.[14] Mendes was represented by the Carson Kolker Organization, later changing toCAA.[10]

Mendes made her feature film debut as Morgan inThe New Romantic, which premiered at theSXSW Festival in March 2018.[15] In the same month, Mendes joined the cast of the romantic comedyThe Perfect Date.[16] The film was released on Netflix on April 12, 2019.[17] In 2019, the filmCoyote Lake premiered, in which Mendes is the lead. In 2020 she appeared in the critically acclaimed sci-fi/comedyPalm Springs, which premiered at theSundance Film Festival and was released that July onHulu.[18] She subsequently headlined theNetflixthriller filmDangerous Lies, released that same year.[19]

In 2022, she co-starred oppositeMaya Hawke in theteenblack comedyDo Revenge forNetflix earning critical acclaim.[20] Mendes played Drea, a popular student at an elite high school trying to get revenge on her ex-boyfriend.[21] Adrian Horton ofThe Guardian praised her performance writing, "In particular, Mendes’s six years onRiverdale have refined her performance of a popular bitch with secret vulnerability to a fine, relishable point."[22] In February 2024, Mendes starred as Ana Santos, an ambitious art world intern in theAmazon Primeromantic comedy film,Upgraded. The film also starredArchie Renaux,Lena Olin, andMarisa Tomei.[23][24] The film earned positive reviews[25] with Courtney Howard ofVariety describing this film as a "clever and charming romantic comedy" adding "Mendes and Renaux make for a lovely on-screen duo, teasing out lighthearted tenderness within the witty banter."[26] That same year she starred in another Amazon romantic comedy,Mùsica (2024) which premiered at theSXSW Festival.[27] Rafael Motamyer ofIndieWire praised the film for its "subversion of the musical comedy", adding the film is "charming" while also praising the chemistry of the two leads.[28]

In June 2024, Mendes co-founded production company Honor Role withRachel Matthews.[29] February 2026, it was announced that Honor Role hired Meredith Ditlow (fromReese Witherspoon'sHello Sunshine) to run film and TV for the production company.[30]

In August 2024, it was announced that she has been cast asTeela co-starring withNicholas Galitzine asHe-Man for the upcoming live action movie reboot ofMasters of the Universe.[31]

Personal life

When auditioning for characters ofLatin American background, she has been told, "You don't look Latina enough."[32] Mendes isBrazilian American and identifies asLatin American. She speaksPortuguese.[33]

"I really appreciate how these two cultures created who I am. I am a Brazilian of blood, with all the extended family of Brazilians, but I was born and raised in the United States. When I go to Brazil, I feel like an American, and in the United States, I always realize the traits that make me Brazilian."

Mendes wasroofied and sexually assaulted when she was a freshman at NYU, which inspired her to get a tattoo that says "to build a home" in cursive lettering above her rib, representing her commitment to build stability and safety for herself.[35]

Mendes dated photographer and director Ian Wallace from 2013 to 2017.[36][37][38] Mendes had begun datingRiverdale co-starCharles Melton by October 2018;[39] they broke up by December 2019.[40] In July 2023, she revealed that she has been dating actor and internet personalityRudy Mancuso for a year whom she met while working onMúsica.[41] They became engaged on October 24, 2025.[42]
