Camila Alire is an American librarian and was president of theAmerican Library Association from 2009 to 2010.^[1] She was the first Hispanic president of the ALA.^[2] She was previously the president ofREFORMA, National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, in 1993-1994.

Alire is dean emerita at theUniversity of New Mexico^[3] andColorado State University. She is also the former dean of libraries at theUniversity of Colorado at Denver. She has served as a professor of practice forSimmons College’s PhD program in managerial leadership in the information professions and as adjunct professor atSan Jose State University Executive MLIS program.^[4]

In 2012 PresidentBarack Obama appointed Alire as a member of the National Council on the Humanities.^[5] Her appointment began on January 7, 2013 and expired on January 26, 2018.^[6]

Alire was honored with the Dr.Arnulfo D. Trejo Librarian of the Year Award by REFORMA in 1997.^[7]

In 2011 the American Library Association honored her with theJoseph W. Lippincott Award for distinguished service to the profession of librarianship.^[8]

She was honored with theAmerican Library Association Equality Award in 2015.^[9]

In June 2019, Alire was recipient of theElizabeth Martinez (librarian) Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) byREFORMA.^[10][11] It is an award created to recognize those who have achieved excellence in librarianship over an extended (over 20 years) period of service and who have made significant, and lasting contributions to REFORMA, as well as to the Latino and the Spanish-speaking communities.
