State Route 165 (SR 165) is a rural north–southstate highway in theU.S. state ofCalifornia. It runs in theSan Joaquin Valley fromInterstate 5 south ofLos Banos toState Route 99 inTurlock.
State Route 165 begins at the junction ofInterstate 5 south ofLos Banos and heads north on a rural two-lane highway known asMercey Springs Road. The highway crosses theCalifornia Aqueduct north of Interstate 5 and enters Los Banos several miles later. It meets up withSR 152 andSR 33, known locally asPacheco Boulevard. After leaving Los Banos, the highway then runs right through the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge and skirts theGreat Valley Grasslands State Park to the west while crossing theSan Joaquin River. At this point, the highway is known asLander Avenue and meets up withSR 140 nearStevinson. It crosses theMerced River en route toHilmar, then crosses intoStanislaus County for a short while, ending atSR 99 inTurlock.[2][3]
SR 165 in Los Banos is part of theNational Highway System,[4] a network of highways that are considered essential to the country's economy, defense, and mobility by theFederal Highway Administration.[5]
Except where prefixed with a letter, postmiles were measured on the road as it was in1964, based on the alignment that existed at the time, and do not necessarily reflect current mileage. R reflects a realignment in the route since then, M indicates a second realignment, L refers to an overlap due to a correction or change, and T indicates postmiles classified as temporary (for a full list of prefixes, seeCalifornia postmile § Official postmile definitions).[6] Segments that remain unconstructed or have been relinquished to local control may be omitted. The numbers reset at county lines; the start and end postmiles in each county are given in the county column.
