Poissard is the French equivalent of the English expression "fishwife".[3]
The style of the painting, somewhat unusual for Turner, has been identified as a tribute by him to the artistRichard Parkes Bonington whoseRomantic views of the French coast had attracted enormous praise before his death fromconsumption at the age of twenty five in 1828.[4]
The picture was displayed at theRoyal Academy Exhibition of 1830 atSomerset House inLondon. Today the painting is in the collection of theBury Art Museum inGreater Manchester, having been acquired in 1897 as part of a gift to mark theDiamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.[5]
