Welsh medieval cantref

Cantrefi of Medieval Wales

Caereinion (fort of Einion) was a medievalcantref in theKingdom of Powys,[1] or possibly it was acommote (cwmwd) within a cantref called Llŷs Wynaf.[2] It was divided into the manors of Uwch Coed and Is Coed.[3]

It lay towards the south of the kingdom, bordering with the commote of Mochnant Uwch Rhaeadr of the cantref ofMochnant and the cantref ofMechain to the north, the commotes ofYstrad Marchell andLlanerch Hudol in the cantref ofYstlyg to the east, the cantrefi ofCedewain to the south andCyfeiliog to the west.[4]

It roughly corresponds to the laterhundred ofMathrafal.[5]

Castle Caereinion, Caereinion Fechan,Llanfair Caereinion,Llanerfyl,Llangadfan,Llangyniew and part ofBerriew are within the territory of this cantref.[3]
