Caedocyon ("fit for cutting dog") is an extinctmonospecific genus of bone crushingcanid which inhabited westernNorth America during theOligocene 30.8—20.6Ma, existing for approximately10.2 million years.[1]
Like other members of the subfamilyHesperocyoninae,Caedocyon is a very primitive or apomorphic canid form, and its evolutionary position is not clear. It is, however, identified by having shortened upper premolars, enlarged caniniform upper thirdincisors, as well as reduced uppermolars. Its simple, highpremolars and the precision of its occlusion suggest a relation withParaenhydrocyon. Known only from a single partial cranium, the dentition suggests the animal was ahypercarnivore ormesocarnivore.[citation needed]
