Several GM marques participated in theIndianapolis 500 when it counted towards theFIAWorld Championship of Drivers from1950 to1960:
In January 2023,General Motors (GM) and theMichael Andretti–ledAndretti Global announced their intention to enter GM'sCadillac brand into theFormula One World Championship.[12] TheFIA approved their bid but theFormula One Group vetoed it,[13][14] explaining that it would reconsider its decision if GM agreed to manufactureFormula One engines.[15] Following the rejection, Andretti continued to build up the team and operations usingToyota's wind tunnel inCologne,[16] whichMcLaren had recently vacated.[17]
In November 2024, following extended disputes between the Formula One Group and Michael Andretti,[18] Andretti Global sponsorTWG Global—led byMark Walter—announced that it was taking over the business operation in areas such as sponsorship, infrastructure planning, and organizational growth.[3][16][19] Michael Andretti remained as an advisor,[3] while his father,Mario, agreed to serve on the board of directors.[16][1] The team renamed its British subsidiary fromAndretti Racing toCadillac, and eventuallyTWG Cadillac Formula 1 Team Ltd.[8]
That month, the Formula One Group tentatively approved Cadillac as a new constructor for the2026 season.[18][20] The entry received its final approval in March 2025,[21] in time for Cadillac to sign the latestConcorde Agreement.[22] The approval by the FIA and Formula One Management confirmed Cadillac's place on the grid as the championship's 11th team for the 2026 season.[23][24] Cadillac will be the first debutant Formula One venture sinceHaas in2016.[25] GM paid an expansion fee ofUS$450 million, over twice as much as originally demanded.[22][26] In addition, GM announced that it would begin manufacturing engines for Cadillac for the 2029 season;[27][28] until then, the team will compete withFerrari engines.[6] In November, Cadillac made its testing debut atImola withSergio Pérez driving a blank-liveriedFerrari SF-23.[29]
The project has been described as part of an effort to expand American involvement in top-tier motorsport. Team representatives have emphasized community engagement, workforce development, and long-term competitiveness over short-term marketing aims.[19]

In December 2024, Cadillac hired the formerVirgin andMarussia CEO,Graeme Lowdon, as team principal.[2] Lowdon is overseen by Dan Towriss, the CEO ofTWG Motorsports.[3][30] The team has hired several alumni of "Team Enstone" in senior roles, including: Formula One chief technical officerPat Symonds,[31] operations officerRob White,[32] technical directorNick Chester, aerodynamicistJon Tomlinson, and advisorNaoki Tokunaga.[33] FormerScuderia Ferrari race engineer,Xavi Marcos, is chief race engineer.[34]
In March 2025, Lowdon said that he intended to hire drivers based on merit, although he "[saw] no reason why an American driver [could not] be selected on merit".[35] Mario Andretti had stated that the team planned to pair an experienced driver with a younger American driver, who would likely be Andretti Global driverColton Herta.[36] Five months later, Cadillac announced formerWorld Drivers' Championship runners-upSergio Pérez andValtteri Bottas as their inaugural driver line-up, citing their experience over American options such as Herta andJosef Newgarden.[37] Herta later agreed to become atest driver and depart IndyCar forFIA Formula 2 in2026 with support from Cadillac.[38]Simon Pagenaud,Pietro Fittipaldi,Charlie Eastwood, andAlec Udell also joined the team assimulator drivers.[39][40][41] In January 2026, Bottas' formerSauber teammateZhou Guanyu joined the team as their reserve driver.[42]
GM and TWG establishedGM Performance Power Units LLC (GM PPU) to produceworks engines for the Cadillac team, and hired longtime GM engine designer Russ O'Blenes to lead the engine division.[43] In addition,Joe Saward reported that GM was seeking to purchase the intellectual property of Renault's former power unit program.[44] GM PPU plans to produceFormula One power units for the 2029 season, usingFerrari power units until then.[28][6] GM PPU announced that it plans to spendUS$65–70 million building an engine factory for 300–350 employees, which is expected to open in the first quarter of 2027, and an additional US$75–80 million in start-up fees.[45]

Cadillac plans to operate four facilities, in:Fishers, Indiana;Concord, North Carolina;Warren, Michigan; andNorthamptonshire, England.[1] The organization will be headquartered at a brand-new facility in Fishers—a suburb ofIndianapolis—which will handle "the bulk" of manufacturing.[46] In January 2026, team principal Graeme Lowdon stated that the organization had advertised 595 positions, receiving 143,265 applications, and had hired 520 staff by the end of 2025.[47] Andretti Global initially suggested that it would base its Formula One and IndyCar operations in same building,[48] but the IndyCar operation was ultimately moved to a different facility;[46]Formula One regulations prohibit the use of multi-team facilities.[49] GM will build a 204,000-square foot power unit facility near itsCharlotte Technical Center in Concord.[43][45] Additional operations will take place in Warren—the location of theGeneral Motors Technical Center.[1] In addition, the team has signed a long-term agreement withToyota to rent theirwind tunnel inCologne, Germany.[50] The race team, competing under anAmerican racing licence,[51] and chassis designers will operate from a facility inSilverstone, England.[48][52]
