TheCağaloğlu Hamam is a historichamam (Turkish bathhouse) inSultanahmet, in the heart of the historic centre ofIstanbul,Turkey. Finished in 1741,[1][2] it was one of the last major hamams to be built inConstantinople/Istanbul during theOttoman period.[3] It was built to raise revenue for the library of SultanMahmud I, situated inside theAyasofya Mosque,[1] and was begun by one of the headarchitects of that time, Suleyman Ağa, then completed by Abdullah Ağa.[3]
Cağaloğlu is a double hamam with separate sections for men and women.[1] The layout follows the long-established traditional form for hamams, though the architectural details and decoration reflect the laterOttoman Baroque style of the 18th century.[2]
This was a particularly well-known hamam visited by many famous individuals including the nursing pioneerFlorence Nightingale, Turkey's first presidentMustafa Kemal Atatürk,King Edward VIII of the UK,Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, Turkish rock starBarış Manço, actorsHarrison Ford andJohn Travolta, modelKate Moss and ballet starRudolf Nureyev, among others.[4][better source needed] Today its clientele is almost entirely made up of tourists.
