C. Michelle Olmstead (born 21 May 1969) is an Americanastronomer, asteroid discoverer andcomputer scientist.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Olmstead attendedNorthern Arizona University as an undergraduate student inphysics andastronomy from 1989-1993, where she was aNASA undergraduate fellow and participated in several asteroidastrometry programs and made measurements using existingsurvey work.[2]

Career

[edit]

She is credited by theMinor Planet Center with the discovery of 46 asteroids for the period between 1977 and 1990. In 1990, withHenry E. Holt, she co-discovered127P/Holt-Olmstead, aperiodic comet that bears her name.[3]

The minor planet3287 Olmstead, aMars-crosser asteroid discovered by astronomerSchelte J. Bus in 1981, was named in her honour.[2] Her lowest numbered discovery,(5633) 1978 UL7, officially discovered atPalomar Observatory in 1978, and presumably taken onphotographic plates byTom Gehrels shortly after the lastPalomar–Leiden Survey campaign, had its discovering astrometric observation published on 12 September 1992 (M.P.C. 20706).[4][5]
