César Fernández de las Heras Caneda (born 10 May 1978) is a Spanish former professionalfootballer who played as adefender.

He played 382 matches in theSegunda División and 402 in theSegunda División B, in a senior career that spanned more than two decades. InLa Liga, he appeared forAthletic Bilbao.[1]

Club career

Caneda was born inVitoria-Gasteiz,Álava. Another product ofAthletic Bilbao's prolific youth system atLezama, he could never however fully establish in the first team, only playing a maximum of ten matches in two differentLa Liga seasons, also having appeared in the1998–99 UEFA Champions League.[2] He was also loaned toUD Salamanca,Sevilla FC andRacing de Santander, all in theSegunda División (he won promotion with the latter two, being regularly used).[3][4]

After his permanent release in 2005, Caneda resumed his career in the second division. He appeared regularly forSD Eibar,Cádiz CF andDeportivo Alavés, but suffered two consecutive relegations with the last two clubs.[5]

In the summer of 2009, Caneda joinedSegunda División B sideCD Guijuelo, switching to another team in that tier,CD Mirandés, for2010–11.[6] On 24 January 2012, the 33-year-old scored in thelast minute of a 2–1 home win againstRCD Espanyol in thequarter-finals of theCopa del Rey following afree kick fromPablo Infante – the competition's top scorer – as the minnows fromCastile and León reached the last-four stage after a 4–4 aggregate score.[7]

Caneda returned to the lower leagues in 2015, going on to represent Racing Santander,[8]UD Logroñés[9][10] andSD Logroñés and retiring aged 45.[11][12] In August 2022, he played in a pre-seasonfriendly againstDeportivo Alavés B, whose team included his 19-year-old son Aritz.[13]

International career

Caneda woncaps forSpain atunder-18 andunder-20 levels.[14][15][16] He represented the latter at the1997 FIFA World Youth Championship held inMalaysia.[17]
