Byron Mann Fung (Chinese:文峰;Jyutping:Man4 Fung1; nèChan) is aHong Kong-American actor. His best-known roles includeRyu inStreet Fighter, Silver Lion inThe Man with the Iron Fists, Wing Chau inThe Big Short, Admiral Augusto Nguyen onThe Expanse, Chang onHell on Wheels,Yao Fei onArrow,[3] and Uncle Six in theNetflix seriesWu Assassins.

Early life and education

Mann was born inHong Kong to a Chinese-American mother and a Chinese father. He was raised bilingual in English and Cantonese and grew up inKowloon.[4] Mann attended theDiocesan Boys' School,[4] an all-boys secondary school in Hong Kong.

Mann attended a Christian college inChicago, Illinois. After his first year, he transferred toUCLA inLos Angeles, California, where he majored in philosophy.[1][2] After graduation, Mann attendedUSC Law School.[5] During law school, he decided to pursue acting and took asabbatical to explore opportunities in Hong Kong.[4][5] Mann later returned to finish law school and passed theCalifornia bar exam.[1][2]

He changed his last name from Chan to Mann.[1][2]

Career

Mann made his film debut in the 1990 TV movie,Last Flight Out. He acted in the film while on a sabbatical at USC Law School.[4][5]

Mann starred in films such asRed Corner andThe Corruptor, and in the television showDark Angel, and has also co-starred inCatwoman andInvincible.[citation needed] He is best known asRyu inStreet Fighter[citation needed] and Koh in the manga-based movieCrying Freeman.[citation needed]

In 2012, Mann starred inThe Man with the Iron Fists, directed byRZA. In 2015, Mann appeared inThe Big Short, aParamount Pictures feature film directed byAdam McKay. He also was a series regular on AMC'sHell on Wheels, playing the powerful railroad mercenary Chang.[1][2][5]

In 2018, Mann was a recurring character on Netflix'sAltered Carbon.[6] In June 2018, it was announced that Mann was cast in the series regular role of Uncle Six on theNetflix series,Wu Assassins.[7][8]

Awards and nominations

In 2016, Mann was nominated for theGolden Maple Award for Best Actor in a TV series broadcast in the U.S. for his role onHell on Wheels.[9]

Personal life

Prior to his acting career, Mann was a top-ranked tennis player, under 16 division, in Hong Kong.[4]
