TheBush family is an Americanpolitical family that has played a prominent role inAmerican politics since the 1950s, foremost as thefirst family of the United States from 1989 to 1993, during the presidency ofGeorge H. W. Bush, and again from 2001 to 2009, during that ofGeorge W. Bush. They also played prominent roles in areas of American news, sports, entertainment, and business. They were also thesecond family of the United States from 1981 to 1989, when George H. W. Bush was vice president. The Bush family is one of four families to have produced two presidents of the United States by the same surname; the others were theAdams,Roosevelt, andHarrison families.

Best known for their involvement in politics, family members have held various national and state offices spanning across four generations, including that of U.S. senator (Prescott Bush); governor (Jeb Bush; and President (George H. W. Bush, who had previously served as vice president, andGeorge W. Bush). Other family members include aNational Football League (NFL) executive (Joe Ellis) and two nationally known television personalities (Billy Bush andJenna Bush Hager) and journalists (John Prescott Ellis).

The Bush family is of primarily English and German descent. The Bush family traces its European origin to the 17th century, with Samuel Bush being their first American-born ancestor, in 1647.[1] According to theSwedish Colonial Society, the Bush family also has Swedish ancestry, going back ten generations to a Swedish farmer named Måns Andersson who migrated fromGothenburg toNew Sweden (Delaware).[2][3]

George Herbert "Bert" Walker (1875–1953) was a wealthy American banker and businessman. His daughter Dorothy marriedPrescott Bush, making him the maternal grandfather of the 41st PresidentGeorge H. W. Bush and the great-grandfather of the 43rd President George W. Bush. He is also the namesake of theWalker Cup, a men's amateur golf trophy contested in odd-numbered years between a U.S. team and a combinedGreat Britain andIreland side.

The influentialLowthorp family, with longstanding roots in American and British politics, military, clergy and business—and strong ties to institutions such as theFreemasons, is related to the Bush family throughSamuel P. Bush and Rev.John Lathrop.[19]

Flora Sheldon, wife ofSamuel P. Bush, was a distant descendant of theLivingston,Schuyler, andBeekman families, prominentNew Netherland merchant and political patrician families.
