Burnham Norton is a village andcivil parish in theEnglish county ofNorfolk. It is 19 miles (31 km) north-east ofKing's Lynn and 34 miles (55 km) north-west ofNorwich and is one of the sevenNorfolk Burnhams.
The village is located close to the coast, and overlooks the tidal Norton Marshes andScolt Head Island National Nature Reserve, both of which fall within the parish. TheRiver Burn runs through the parish and theA149 road betweenKing's Lynn andGreat Yarmouth runs close to the village. At the2001 census the parish had a population of 151. The 2011 census recorded a population of 173.[1]
The village name is ofAnglo-Saxon origin,[2] and in theDomesday Book it is listed in the same entry asBurnham Sutton,Burnham Ulph andBurnham Westgate as a settlement of 69 households in thehundred of Brothercross. They were divided between the estates ofRoger Bigod,Ramsey Abbey andHugh de Montfort.[3]
Burnham Norton Friary was built in the parish in 1241 and was the firstCarmelite monastery in England. The Friary was abandoned in theDissolution of the Monasteries and is now a ruin.
Burnham Norton's parish church is dedicated toSaint Margaret and is one of Norfolk's 124 remaininground-tower churches. The church is located in the far south of the parish close to the boundary withBurnham Market and the remains of the Friary. The building is Grade I listed.[4] The church was partly restored in the 19th century and has an elaborate paintedpulpit depicting various saints. Also within the church are stained-glass windows depictingSaint Margaret of Antioch andSaint Margaret of Scotland designed byTrena Cox and a set of royal arms from the reign ofKing William III.[5]
