Burke Frederick St John Trend, Baron Trend,GCB, CVO, PC (2 January 1914 – 21 July 1987)[1] was a Britishcivil servant and laterRector ofLincoln College, Oxford.

Biography

Trend was educated atWhitgift School andMerton College, Oxford, where he took first class honours in Classics.[2] He then joined theCivil Service, spending most of his career in theTreasury. He becameCabinet Secretary underAlec Douglas-Home,Harold Wilson andTed Heath between 1963 and 1973.

Trend was appointed aCommander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the1953 Coronation Honours.[2][3] He was appointed aCompanion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the1955 New Year Honours,[2][4] promoted toKnight Commander (KCB) in the1962 Birthday Honours[2][5] and aKnight Grand Cross in the1968 New Year Honours.[6] On 7 March 1974 he was created alife peer asBaron Trend, ofGreenwich in Greater London.[7]

He led an investigation in the 1970s into allegations of penetration of the British Secret Services from beforeWorld War II until the 1960s. His conclusion was that there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations.Peter Wright in his memoirs,Spycatcher, discusses Trend and his report.[8]

Trend married Patricia Charlotte Shaw in 1949; they had three children.[2] One son,Michael Trend, was aMember of Parliament (Conservative) from 1992 to 2005.
